Spark Plugs 101 - Bert Ogden Toyota in Harlingen, Texas

Vehicle maintenance is crucial for your safety — and for getting the most out of your vehicle in terms of efficiency and longevity. That’s why we’ve prioritized ongoing vehicle care even during the COVID-19 pandemic with contactless maintenance options, sanitation of vehicles before and after service, and full CDC protocols on site, including social distancing and mask requirements. In addition to oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid top-offs, consider less frequent but just as important maintenance items like air filter changes, brake maintenance, and spark plug replacements.

What Are Spark Plugs?

You may have heard of a spark plug, but if you’re not much of a mechanic, you might not know just how important they are. Your spark plugs are responsible for giving the ignition the jolt (i.e., spark) of electricity it needs to start the car. In essence, if your spark plugs don’t work, you’re not going anywhere.

When your spark plugs are nearing the end of their life, you may notice frequent engine misfires and rough starts. Eventually, the spark plugs will stop working altogether, which could leave you stranded. That’s why we encourage you to stay on top of routine maintenance; our factory-trained technicians will help replace your spark plugs before that ever becomes a potential risk.

How Often Should I Replace My Spark Plugs?

Most automakers recommend you replace your spark plugs every 30,000 miles, but quite a few variables can affect that. If you drive longer distances less frequently, your spark plugs will last longer; if you drive short distances multiple times a day (i.e., starting your car multiple times), they won’t last as long. Copper spark plugs are the most affordable, but the most durable spark plugs can last up to four times as long as copper spark plugs, so you truly get what you pay for.
