Are you searching for a large sedan that is perfect for you and your family? Two of the segment's top options are the 2019 Toyota Avalon and the 2019 Ford Taurus. But which is right for you? Almost every way you look at it, the Toyota Avalon is the superior vehicle. Here's why:

Performance

The standard engine powering the 2019 Toyota Avalon is a 3.5-liter V6 24-valve, which pairs with an eight-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with intelligence (ECT-i) with Sequential Shiftmatic™ Mode. This engine cranks out 301 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. The 2019 Ford Taurus just can’t compete. The new Taurus is powered by a standard 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6, linked to a six-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission with Sport Mode and Shifter Button Activation, but this engine only delivers 288 horsepower and 254 lb-ft of torque.

Fuel Economy

Despite offering more power, the Avalon’s standard engine is more efficient than the Taurus’. The 3.5-liter V6 achieves up to 22 miles per gallon in the city and 32 miles per gallon on the highway.* In comparison, the Taurus’ 3.5-liter V6 achieves just 18 miles per gallon in the city and 27 on the highway.

More importantly, the Avalon is available with a hybrid engine across three trims: Avalon Hybrid XLE, Avalon Hybrid XSE, and Avalon Hybrid Limited. These models achieve up to 43 miles per gallon in the city and 44 on the highway.*

Interior Space

The 2019 Toyota Avalon offers more passenger volume than the 2019 Ford Taurus. While both models comfortably seat five occupants, the Avalon boasts 104.3 cubic feet of cargo space, compared to 102.2 cubic feet in the Taurus. Specifically, the Toyota Avalon offers more front shoulder room (58.3 inches compared to 57.9 inches), front leg room (42.1 inches compared to 41. 9 inches), second-row head room (37.9 inches compared to 37.8 inches), and second-row shoulder room (57.1 inches compared to 56.9 inches)..

Expert Reviews

The 2019 Toyota Avalon is viewed more favorably by critics. The 2019 Taurus earned a 6.8 out of 10 on Edmunds and a 2 out of 5 on CarsDirect while the 2019 Avalon earned 5 stars on Edmunds and 8.9 out of 10 on U.S. News & World Report.
